READY - FIRE - AIM

Have you ever asked a young person “Why did you do that?” What were you thinking?” and they answered “I don’t know.”

Research from The Medical Institute shows they actually don’t know.  Rather than think something through, they form a thought, react on that thought and then think about it.

This is a major reason why youth need proper guidance as they mature into adulthood.

The human brain develops into fully mature physical size usually around the age of 12.  However, it takes much longer (up to age 25) to reach a level of genuine maturity in the pre-frontal cortex.  This is when the cognitive processing is fully developed.  Some components of cognitive processing (or thought) are emotional reasoning, critical thinking, planning, judgement, impulse control, and reactionary behavior.  It is, therefore, our duty to help children learn proper development of their decision making through positive guidance and role modeling.

To use a very basic word picture of how the brain develops cognitively, there are times when the wiring trims, prunes and reroutes used and non-used processing functions to develop the input of social environment, defensive situations, personal interactions, etc.

For example: Those who regularly drink to excess or use drugs at a young age will develop normal thought and behavior with abnormally developed thought processing.  An alcoholic behind the wheel of a car may think he or she is doing a great job of driving as they weave aimlessly down the road.  So it is with his or her normal decision making while sober.  This does not, however, mean they think normally while drunk.  This notion, to most of us, may appear to be completely random and childish, but to the adult thinking with a drug developed brain it may, in fact, seem perfectly logical.

There is a way for these people to learn normal thought and behavior, but it requires willingness, structure and support.  Since the Nice Ninjas is a preventative training, we recommend contacting Alcoholics Anonymous for such people.  We also recommend Alanon for family members who will develop stress induced thinking patterns and behavior of their own which they also may not realize exist.  Also, don’t think that two problem users can help each other.  This would be an example of the blind leading the blind.  Another way to put it is, two ding-a-lings don’t make a bell.

Of course there are many other stimuli besides drugs and alcohol. Other types of conditioning besides or  mixed with drugs and alcohol may be sex at a young age, molestation, abuse, unhealthy relationships, dysfunctional home environment, violent video games, illness, war, bullying and other experiences.  Maybe you recognize yourself in one of these.  You can still learn to overcome.

It is critical that we continue to help protect and properly develop the cognitive thought processing in the brains of our young people.  That is our job, like it or not, and, if we don’t do it, the cognitive training will be done by the media, television and the socially acceptable ills of our world today: homosexuality, lewdness, vulgarity, sexual promiscuity, violence, and entitled selfishness.

Children are a God given joy!  We, as adults, need to learn and understand how to best apply our role as guardians and mentors to help them grow into a happy and healthy adulthood.
